Fantastic Belva Lockwood and Benjamin Butler Mechanical Trade Card,
2.75" x 5". One-sided card printed with black and pale red ink. Fine condition. Belva Lockwood was the first female lawyer allowed to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1884, she ran for president with Marietta Stow as her running mate under the banner of the Equal Rights Party, a move that some suffragists opposed on the grounds that she would be subject to ridicule and hurt the cause for women's voting rights. She ran anyway, despite the many satirical barbs directed against her in the press and in magazines such as
Puck,
drawing over 4,000 votes, with many other ballots probably thrown out for spurious reasons. Ben Butler was sometimes depicted by his political opponents as a sexual libertine, although there is little actual evidence to support this accusation. Butler also campaigned for president in 1884 as the candidate of the National Greenback Party. The fact that Butler and Lockwood were both controversial figures competing in the same election caused them on occasion to be lampooned together and this trade card. When Lockwood's tipped-on skirt is lifted, a hiding Butler is revealed. This exceedingly rare mechanical "naughty" card is one of those "must have" items that is missing in most of the top trade card and suffrage collections. Please note: there is a piece of tape on the skirt.
