"Pocahontas"
Cigar Store Tobacconist's Indian Maid. Measuring 72" tall with a base 20" x 18", carver unidentified. Draped in a dark colored robe and holding a round of cigars in her left hand, the maid appears offering the cigars for sale to entice patrons into the tobacco store. Although this trade sign is no stranger to the damage of an outdoor trade sign she looks as she would have in the 1880s. A closer inspection reveals expected overall surface cracks and some pitting, with the most noticeable filling and touchup down the center back of the cape. The rich overall patina makes the crack across the hand and down the apron hardly noticeable, but it is definitely there. The tops of the feathers on her headdress appear to have been touched up and her black hair flowing down her back appears to have some areas of over paint,This very fine example is sited as having been on exhibit in 1966 at the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Cigar Store Indians and is pictured in the article written about the exhibit called The "Vanished American."
