1870-1871 Hotel Register From The Drovers Hotel Pueblo, Colorado.
This historically significant register will be a valuable research tool for students of Western history. The large-format register measures 11.5" x 13.5" and covers the dates September, 1870 through September, 1871. Many notable names appear as guests of the hotel during this period including
Horace Greeley,
founder of the
New York Tribune
and famous for his "go west young man" quote,
John S. Chisum,
of Chisum Trail fame, Indian agent
William F.M. Arny,
William Gilpin,
first territorial governor of Colorado, and Civil War general
Benjamin F. Butler.
Undoubtedly many other regionally significant names grace the pages of this document and many pleasant hours can be spent in discovering their identities. Additionally included are several pages of advertisements, used as ink blotters, for various Pueblo businesses. Over time the register has become unbound and both front and back covers as well as a few internal leaves are missing. There is the usual foxing and age toning to the pages. This was a "working" document so there is the usual wear one would normally associate with a document of this kind.
