Description

Mantel used in a stagecoach stop on the Texas frontier

Nalle Co. Curly Pine Mantel, measuring 62.75" wide and 76" tall; 10.5" deep. This mantel was built by the Nalle Company, a lumber establishment in Austin that specialized in church pews, bars, and mantels. The company, owned by Joseph Nalle and Ernest Nalle, was established in 1871 and closed circa 1914. According to an affidavit from the original seller, this mantel was used at a ranch that served as an official stagecoach stop near Bulverde, Texas, just north of San Antonio. The stop closed circa 1904. Stamped on the back of the mantel: "Mfg by Nalle & Co Austin, Texas." Three period beveled-glass mirrors are installed in the curly-pine ornamental mantel, which is very sturdy and bears only expected wear. (Curly pine is a scarce, highly sought-after wood grain pattern.) Also included are twelve color photographs taken in 1993 and labeled "Stage Coach Station Ranch, Borgfeld Rd., Bulverde, San Antonio, TX." The first stagecoach lines were formed in Texas in 1835. Until the last one closed in the early twentieth century, travel on a coach line was dangerous, particularly along the frontier in places like San Antonio, because of the presence of bandits and hostile Indians.
