Description
First-Wave Assault Ship on D-Day at Omaha Beach
USS Charles Carroll (APA-26) Ensign.On D-Day, the Charles Carroll was assigned to Assault Group O2 of the Western Naval Task force charged with delivering the 3rd Battalion (Companies I, K, L & M) of the 116th Infantry, 29th Division to Omaha Beach. They landed with the second wave at about 7:00 A.M.
The ensign of the Charles Carroll is 72" X 96" sewn cotton, stars & stripes finished with a canvas header with two white metal wartime grommets. The flag is marked on the reverse hoist in black, "USS Charles Carroll Assault Attack Transport Normandy 7 June 44 Invasion South France - Morocco."
USS Charles Carroll (APA-28) was a Crescent City-class attack transport that was named after a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll of Maryland, the only Roman Catholic to sign the document. The vessel was commissioned 13 August 1942 and was immediately assigned to ferry troops for the invasion of North Africa. Reassigned to the Pacific, she struck a mine and remained in the Atlantic. After repairs, she was tasked with ferrying troops for both the Invasion of Sicily and then the Italian mainland.
At D-Day, the Charles Carroll landed the 3rd Battalion and their equipment and then evacuated the wounded, returning to Omaha Beach with additional troops and supplies. After D-Day, she supported the invasion of southern France before being transferred to the Pacific for the Invasion of Okinawa.
D-Day associated flags are highly sought after by collectors. This flag would be appropriate for an advanced D-Day WWII collector.
WWII Awards of the USS Charles Carroll: American Campaign Medal; Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with five campaign stars; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with star; World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal (with Asia clasp).
Condition: Good - the flag is used, worn and soiled with a single "L" tear in the second white stripe from the bottom.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
