Description

Normandy Bombardment Ship - USS Ellyson (DD-454. USS Ellyson (DD-454/DMS-19), a Gleaves-class destroyer commissioned in November of 1941. She was nicknamed the "Elly Mae" and is the only US warship ever named for named for the US naval officer Commander Theodore Gordon Ellyson, a 1905 graduate of the Naval Academy. At Normandy she was a Bombardment Ship assigned to support the Rangers at Pointe du Hoc.

This ensign is a cotton Bulldog Brand, bunting, 42" X 66", 48-star, Schiffli embroidered, sewn stripe flag finished with a canvas heading and two grey metal war time grommets. The flag bears a maker's mark of the Dettra Flag Co. and is inscribed on the reverse hoist, "ELLYSON" and "F GEN BRADLEY 4 JUNE 1944."

By repute, this flag was worn by the Ellyson on June 4, 1944 during a visit by U.S. First Army commander Lt. General Omar Bradley when he conferred with Assault Force "U" (Utah) commander Rear Admiral Donald P. Moon to postpone the landings due to unsuitable landing conditions; high winds and heavy seas coupled with low clouds that would hinder Allied air cover.

This is a flag for a collector of D-Day, Normandy, and General Omar Bradley artifacts.

Condition: The ensign from the Ellyson is in good condition. It is used, worn and soiled with repairs to the fly corners, the flag is otherwise complete.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
