Description
MacArthur Landing Flag -LUZON - USS Boise, Small Boat (CL-47-3). In 1945, the USS Boise served as the flagship for the Supreme Commander, Southwest Pacific Area, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, on two occasions in 1945; from January 9 to 13 for the Luzon landing and again from June 3 to 16 on his 3,500-mile tour of the Central and Southern Philippines. While to Boise served as the flagship, MacArthur traveled from ship to shore in one of her boats, the CL-47-3.The boat flag of the CL-47-3 is a cotton, 35" X 58", 48-star, dye printed starfield, sewn stripe flag finished with a header and grommets. The flag is inscribed, in cursive, "G. Mac A. To Shore" and "BOISE - CL-47-3." A US Navy boat is an un-commissioned waterborne unit, capable of limited independent operation. It may be assigned to and carried on a commissioned warship as a ship's boat.
The cruiser Boise was a storied and decorated ship that served in all three theatres of the war. She served General MacArthur when he returned to Luzon on January 9, 1945 in fulfillment of the promise he'd made in 1942, when he famously uttered, "I came through and I shall return" and, again, when the liberation of the Philippines was underway, General MacArthur undertook an inspection tour of the southern Philippines and Borneo, including observing the Labuan landings on North Borneo. Attempts to further identify the CL-47-3, have proven elusive. MacArthur is documented to have transferred to the landing craft for the Luzon landing.

Condition: The Boat Flag of the CL-47-3 is in good condition. It is used, worn and soiled the upper fly corner has a fabric split.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
