1945-1949 HQ Flag for The Far East Command
General Douglas MacArthur Tokyo Headquarters Flag.This flag flew from atop the SCAP headquarters building, the former offices of the Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company, Limited, located in the Yurakucho business district of Tokyo, situated just southeast of the Imperial Palace, in close proximity to the Japanese emperor. The SCAP building was where the post-war Japanese Constitution was written.
The flag is an approximately 50" X 100" 48-star, Annin Defiance brand, double appliqué & machine sewn cotton flag, finished with a canvas duck heading and grommets, which have been fitted with wooden toggles. On the obverse hoist, there is a maker's mark and, on the reverse, the flag is marked "Gen. MacArthur HQ Japan".
SCAP was the title held by General Douglas MacArthur during the Allied occupation of Japan as he sought to "restore security, dignity and self-respect" to the Japanese people. Prominent for his wartime activities in the Pacific Theatre, MacArthur as SCAP is less recognized, but he helped the Japanese government transform from a totalitarian wartime regime into a peaceful parliamentary democracy. At MacArthur's insistence, Emperor Hirohito remained on the imperial throne. The term SCAP was also used generically to refer to both the headquarters offices and the officers, both civil and military. Besides overseeing the political rehabilitation of Japan, SCAP was also responsible for the reform of the Japanese public health and welfare programs, upgrading medical and nursing schools, child care, health insurance, the prosecution of war criminals and the censorship of the Japanese media. The noted historian William Manchester said of SCAP, "...without MacArthur's leadership, Japan would not have been able to make the move from an imperial, totalitarian state, to a democracy."
The MacArthur HQ flag is in Good to Fair condition - it is used, worn, soiled and faded.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
