Description

D-Day Amphibious Landing Craft (LCVP) Higgins Boat 48-Star Flag.
Approximately 32 x 56-inches. Lightly marked "LCVP 2" on the obverse hoist. Dr. Rungee's notes for this flag suggest it is attributed to an LCVP launched from the USS Samuel Chase (APA-26) a part of Flotilla 10 at Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944. Ernest Hemingway was in one of the LCVPs that day and wrote of the experience "Under their steel helmets they looked like pikemen of the Middle Ages to whose aid in battle had suddenly come some strange unbelievable monster."

Condition: Printed stars and machine-sewn stripes. Zinc grommets. Faded with raggedness at the fly end. Good condition.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
