Description

[Pancho Villa]: Documents Related to the Raid on Columbus, New Mexico. Material from the estate of Col. Herbert J. Slocum, a career officer who first joined the 7th Cavalry in 1876. There is an envelope marked "War Dep't Report on Villas Attack exonerating Col. Slocum" (toning, ink stains and tears). We have the two page carbon copy report with pencil notation "Gen'l Pershing to Gen'l Funston to Inspector Gen'l & approved by Secty War" plus a note by Slocum saying the report was given to him by General Scott. The report fully exonerates Slocum for his response to Villa's surprise attack. Includes an August 3, 1916 TLS by W. R. Ledyard, Chairman of the Michigan Central Railroad Company to Slocum, commenting on the situation, criticizing the yellow press and members of Congress who are "forever investigating some one or some thing, and so to gain a cheap notoriety..." Sold with four carbon copy letters sent to Slocum in 1917 covering various military and war-related matters.
