Description
Jack McCall: The Actual Leg Irons Worn by Him Prior to His Hanging for the Murder of "Wild Bill" Hickok. The story is one of the most familiar in Western folklore: Jack McCall brazenly walked into a Deadwood saloon, and shot Hickok in the back of the head as he sat at a poker table, famously holding what has since been called the "Dead Man's Hand" of aces and eights. To this day his motives remain uncertain. McCall first claimed that he shot Hickok in retaliation for the shooting of his brother sometime earlier in Kansas. Later he would claim that he was paid $200 by some Deadwood gamblers who feared violence at the hand of the volatile and unpredictable Hickok. Other contemporaries claimed that McCall was angry over a gambling loss to Hickok earlier in the day, while Frank Dalton asserted that the murder was in retaliation for Wild Bill's shooting of McCall's cousin, Phil Coe. In any case, there was not much question who was responsible for Hickok's demise, and McCall was quickly apprehended.His quickly-organized local trial amazingly resulted in a not guilty verdict after McCall pleaded that the homicide was justifiable. However, McCall was quickly arrested again, allegedly at the instigation of Hickok's close friend Calamity Jane. He was transported to Yankton, Dakota, where he was retried, found guilty, and hanged on March 1, 1877.
The leg irons offered here came from a now-defunct Museum in Yankton, where they were displayed for decades. The original museum tag indicates that they were acquired by the museum on July 29, 1929, and states that they were removed from McCall's ankles just before he was hanged. A unique artifact from one of the most famous episodes in the history of the Wild West!
