Letter Describing Two Hundred Indians, Fires Were Still Burning, etc., 1865. Autograph Document Signed "Chas. F. Porter." Four pages, 8" x 12.5", regarding Indian conflicts. Headquarters, post Gilman Station, Nebraska Terr., May 15, 1865, from C. F. Porter, Capt., 1st Battalion, Nebraska vol. Cavalry to Lt. F. A. McDonald, A. A. A. Gent'l, E. S D of the plains. Reads, in part: "Sir, I have the honor respectfully to report, that at about half past one O'clock P.M. on Friday the 12th instant, I received information from Sergt. Langstaff of my company in command of detachment of troops at Smith's station and that the men under his command had had a fight with about thirty Indians near the station and that the Indians had succeeded in driving away Mr. Smith's cattle across the Platte River. I sent a courier to post Cottonwood, notified Major O' Brien of the facts and requested him to send some mounted men to cooperate with me in following the Indians (if possible). I immediately started with twenty-one men for the point where the Indians had crossed the river. Some men who had been at Smith's station during the fight met me at the crossing and said that they had seen another band of Indians on the island besides those that drove away the cattle...After proceeding about five miles farther my scouts discovered where a large party of Indians had been in camp across the stream. At least two hundred Indians had been in camp at that place there was from forty to fifty camp fires and it was evident that the whole party had left but a short time previous as a number of the fires were still burning. This party added to the one I had following made nearly three hundred, considering it recklessness and unwise to follow so large a party with my small force...I decided to return to the Platte about 35 miles from the Platte I discovered where some other troops had been but had turned back..." Great content.Condition: Fine-very fine, tears in fold towards bottom.
