Description

George Armstrong Custer: Three 1876-1877 Works. Includes (1) Report of the Secretary of War, Vol. 1, 1876-1877, 518 pages in moderately worn original leather binding. Old Western Reserve Historical Society label states it was donated by the Interior Dept., Washington, D.C. in 1894. Substantial content relating to Indian affairs, including highly detailed reports by Sheridan, Terry, Reno, Benteen, Crook, Miles, and others on the movements and campaign which resulted in Custer's annihilation at Little Big Horn. Terrific, fascinating content. This volume also included colorful fold-out illustrations of regulation military uniforms and accessories. (2) Six-page report from the Army Corps of Engineers, July 10, 1876, including discussion of the Custer campaign, pages 699-704, removed from a larger volume. Includes a great 17.5" x 17" 1876 map of the battlefield, drawn shortly after the battle, showing the Indian village, Reno's line of retreat and final position, and the battleground. "The figures on the map are those of the stakes driven into the ground to mark the graves" of Custer and his officers. Excellent condition with several partial separations along fold lines. (3) Battle of Washita River: Thirty-eight page 1869 report to Congress from the Secretary of the Interior on the campaign and battle.
