Description
Western Author William E. Hawks Archive. Large archive of ephemera assembled by Western author William E. Hawks, the self-proclaimed "Historian of the Plains", who was a regular contributor to the pulp magazine "Cowboy Stories" and a correspondent with prominent Western figures. We have sorted the material into four groups, as shown in the accompanying photographs. The first group has four pieces of ephemera dealing with Frontier Day celebrations and performances of the 101 Ranch Real Wild West show. The second group has nine 3.5" x 4.5" snapshots of Native American artifacts including Geronimo's war bonnet and buckskin suit modeled by his daughter, fifteen postcards of which nine portray Wild West show performers or frontier legends (Wild Bill Hickok, John Chisum), three mounted studio portraits of Hawks in his cowboy memorabilia decorated bedroom, William Hawks in front of his carriage shop and Ralph J. Starks, and four books ("Life of F. M. Buckelew The Indian Captive", "The End of the Cattle Trail", "A Treatise on the Horse and His Diseases" and "Wild Life Among the Redmen"), all with faults. The third group has a photo of a lady bronco buster, two Western postcards (J. H. Cook at Agate, Neb.), ten pages of handwritten and typewritten research, a small group of newspaper clippings, legal documents including wills of Hawks Sr. & Jr., typewritten and mimeographed sheets of Cowboy and Trail Songs, four business cards and billheads, and more than twenty pieces of correspondence from curio dealers, the general public and personal friends. Of note are a 3-page ALS from Maynard Dixon referencing Charles Russell ("He's a dandy!") and frontier celebrations in Yankton and New Mexico, two letters from Cheyenne old timer Luke Voorhees, TLS of Western author Andy Adams, ALS from vaudeville performer Duke R. Lee, and an ALS from Western poet Charles D. Randolph a.k.a. "Buckskin Bill". Some of these are on illustrated letterheads. The final group includes forty-four pages of songs, poems and stories (handwritten, typewritten and mimeographed) plus a stack of newspaper clippings and stories removed from pulp publications.Auction Info
