Description

Simply the Finest Model Stagecoach We Have Ever Seen! No other words suffice to describe this stunning 22.5", 1/8 scale model of a classic Abbot & Downing Concord Coach. The detail must be seen up close to be believed: All moving parts work, even the tiny door latches. Each coachlight alone is made up of seventeen parts, and the interior detail is as flawless as the exterior, down to the silk window blinds in the beveled glass windows. All of the metal parts are brass, gold-plated to prevent tarnish. In all, there are some TWO THOUSAND meticulously hand-crafted parts, and required two years to create. It is perhaps the greatest tour de force by one of the world's most renowned makers of detailed models, Canadian Stan Wychopen (1941-2009). The first coach was built in the early 1990s, and it is believed that only five were completed before the craftsman's untimely death. One is in the collection of the Royal Alberta Museum, one in that of hotel executive Eric Hilton, and one was reputedly presented to Prince Phillip of Great Britain. The first coach was sold for $7500, but by the time of Wychopen's death the priced had escalated to $50,000. This coach is accompanied by Wychopen's certificate stating it to be the second produced. Seriously interested parties should contact Jeff Burleson at (214) 409-1654 to request a video CD which recounts the story of Wychopen's coaches in great detail.

It is important to note that these coaches, while fundamentally duplicating the characteristics of an Abbot & Downing Concord, also display a certain amount of creative license in the details, notably the addition of a coachman's seat on the back. The example offered here bears the name of a Canadian company, Round Hill Stage Lines. However, in the Old West the boundaries between Canada and the United States across the Central Plains was largely arbitrary, and a visitor to late 19th century Calgary would be hard pressed to differentiate the wild and wooly town from its American counterparts.

The overall length of the coach, including the rig for the horses, it 40 inches. It is in pristine condition and comes in a beautiful walnut storage and travel case with brass fittings. Seriously interested parties are encouraged to view this spectacular coach in person, or at the very least request the video. Only five were built, and several of those are ensconced in presumably permanent collections. This may well be the only opportunity one might ever have to possess one of Wychopen's masterpieces.
