Description

San Antonio Chief of Detectives Gold Badge. This solid gold badge (stamped "Hertzberg 14K") was presented to Silas Joe Harris in 1927. It is engraved on the reverse: "From Comrades of Police Dep't. and Friends Sept - 16 -1927". It is constructed of several elements: the back plate (stamped 14K), an encircling wreath and an inner hub with five-pointed star. The star has a diamond in its center and the eye of the eagle is likewise a diamond. The inner hub reads "Texas" in gold letters on blue enamel. The hub reads: "Joe Harris Chief of Detectives". It is housed in the original leather carrying case. Harris (1868-1942) worked for the San Antonio Police Department most of his adult life, rising from a patrolman to Chief of Detectives. His law enforcement career spanned the years 1901 to 1929. The date on this badge coincides with Harris' promotion to Chief of Detectives. He specialized in the apprehension of confidence men and pickpockets. In 1921, he was considered on the "short list" of candidates for Chief of Police.
