Description

Deserving of inclusion in the most sophisticated California or Western collection.

Most Rare, Incredible Condition California Half Seat Saddle by S. C. Foy, Los Angeles, Circa 1870. Possibly the finest example of this iconic maker's work known to exist. Foy moved to California in 1854 and opened his harness business at 217 Los Angeles Street. At the time of his death, in 1901, it was the oldest operating business in the city of Los Angeles. This magnificent saddle, with Sam Stagg rigging, is exquisitely tooled/ carved with floral and scroll decoration. Rawhide covered cantle and horn, lined stirrup fenders. The cantle retains the original lacquered paper label, "S. C. Foy/ Makers/ Los Angeles, Calif." and is hot stamped on both sides of the fork "Foy Los Angeles" Absolutely superb, near mint, untouched condition, retaining the original horsehair cinch.
