Description
Major Thomas Moore Harwood: Three Autograph Letters including: (1) June 28, 1899, San Saba, Texas, three pages, 8.5" x 11", Rector & Brown, Attorneys at Law and Land Agents letterhead. In this letter to Major T. M. Harwood of Gonzales, Texas, the attorneys refer to property owned by Judge James Fentress of Chicago who was leasing land out through Rector and Brown. Also discussed are current ranch prices and conditions for cattle. Includes the original postmarked envelope; (2) July 1, 1889, San Saba, Texas, one page, 8.5" x 11". In this letter, also written to Major Harwood, the attorneys give lease dollar amounts; (3) August 10, 1899, two pages, 5.5" x 9". In this letter to Judge Fentress, Harwood states that he is not capable of giving advice on the sale of Fentress' land. He writes (in part): "after a long business life when he is 72 years old, a man. . . should cease to try to attend to important business matters. . . [but he does predict] "that your lands will some day, even as grasslands to raise & fatten beef cattle & mutto-for shipment to Europe from Galveston-bring you at least as much as $5.00 per acre." Harwood was a Confederate major during the Civil War. He died on January 29, 1900, shortly after these letters were written. The envelope and three letters are in very good condition.
