Document Signed Indicting Edward Fulsom for Murder, Later Hanged, ca. 1880s. Edward Fulsom had served one term in the penitentiary, and in February, 1881, fled to the Indian country to avoid prosecution on a charge of horse stealing. He beat William Massingill to death with a pistol in a saloon brawl on the Arkansas-Indian Territory line, after the latter had been wounded and lay on the floor, unarmed and helpless. Fulsom was such a slightly built man that his fall on the gallows did not break his neck. His pulse beat for one hour and three minutes before jail physicians pronounced him dead.This pre-printed 5" x 8"document is his indictment for murder. It reads: "Office of United States Marshall Western District of Arkansas. I hereby certify that I delivered a list of petit jurors in attendance on the United States district court eastern district of Arkansas, February term 1882 to Edward Fulsom indicted for Murder and now confined in the United States jail at Fort Smith, Arkansas on the 9 day of Feb 1882 at 12 o'clock __ M. V. Dell, Marshall by "C. C. Ayers" deputy."
Condition: Very good-fine, separated at fold near bottom repair with archival tape.
