Description

Buffalo Bill's Wild West: The Sought-After Classic "White Eagle" Poster. Esteemed far beyond the circles of Western Americana collecting as one of the great examples of late nineteenth century stone lithography. Nine-color printing with extensive use of metallic gold, by A. Hoen & Co., Baltimore. It depicts Cody as a scout for a wagon train, shown in the background. A white eagle soars in the sky above, a reference to Cody's nickname, "The White Eagle." This 22.25" x 27.25" poster is quite rare and considered a "must have" for the advanced Buffalo Bill collector. It was originally designed in 1893 for Cody's show in conjunction with the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. The condition on this example is outstanding... we give it a 9.5. The borders are a full 1 3/8" all around. It has been backed with rice paper. This has effectively repaired two teensy "flea bites" on the right margin and a couple of areas of minor loss to the bottom border. It is far superior to the examples sold in our June 10, 2012 sale, both of which had tears and restoration in varying degrees. This has had no restoration whatsoever, as far as we can tell, and is an unimprovable example.
