Description

[Annexation] The Connecticut Courant. Four pages, folio, Hartford, CT, December 7, 1844. Interesting issue with commentary on the presidential election of 1844, as well as a lengthy message from outgoing President John Tyler on a variety of issues. Much attention is paid to the matter of Texas annexation: "It is the will of both the People and the States, that Texas shall be annexed to the Union promptly and immediately... [Texas] still desires to throw herself under the protection of our laws and to partake of the blessings of our Federative system: while every American interest would seem to require it. The extension of our coast wise and foreign trade, to an amount almost incalculable - the enlargement of the market for our manufactures - a constantly growing market for our agricultural productions - safety to our frontiers, and additional strength and stability to the Union - these are the results which would rapidly develop themselves, upon the consummation of the measure of annexation." Newspaper is a bit worn at edges and folds. A few faint soiled spots, but generally fine.
