Description
Wells, Fargo & Company: 50th Anniversary Medal. This 1.5" silver medal was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Wells, Fargo & Company. You might call it a silver "Golden" anniversary medal. It was given to employees with at least one year's standing. The obverse, inscribed "Wells Fargo & Company", has two vignettes: a passenger stage coach under attack by a desperado and a Pony Express rider under attack by an Indian with a bow & arrow. The reverse, inscribed "March 18th 1852 1902 Express and Banking Fidelity", shows factories, a ship, telegraph or telephone wires, an express train, a hand grasping lightning, crossed keys, two quills and a rubber stamp or seal. It is housed in the original maroon leather case with purple velvet liner. A blue silk liner is gold stamped: "Wells, Fargo & Company, March 18th 1852 March 18th 1902." The inscription is worn, but legible and the hinge of the case is loose, but still attached. In numismatic terms, the medal grades Very Fine.Due to a computer error when this auction was posted on our web site, some clients were inadvertently able to place bids at below the established minimum bids published in the catalog. This has been corrected, and the minimum required bid now posted above either reflects that required opening bid or bidding action at or above the starting bid.
