Description
19th Century Album Compiled by A.W. Markley Containing More Than 125 Railroad, Coach, and Steamer Passes from companies across the country. Album measures 12.5" x 10.25", and most of the passes date from the late 1860s through the 1870s. The passes are mounted about 8 to a page, and the last pages contain printed minutes from railroad company meetings and a few letters.A.W. Markley had a long career in railroads in New Jersey, including posts as a receiver for the Bridgeton and Port Norris Railroad Company, and as a director of the Cape May and Millville Railroad of New Jersey. All of the passes contained in the album are issued to Markley and/or his family for travel. Passes of not include an "Excursion" pass signed by William H. Seward for passage on to a Baltimore and Ohio Co. train that departed from Washington D.C. on August 28, 1866 for a presidential tour of the lakes. Among the guests on board were President Johnson, William Seward, Ulysses S. Grant and David Farragut. Markley had also been on board Lincoln's funeral train, suggesting he had strong political ties to Washington.
Also of note is a pass for the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Rail Road signed by former Confederate General Pierre G.T Beauregard, then president of the company. Other railroad and steamer passes included are: Utah Southern Railroad; Charlotte, Columbia, and Augusta Railroad; Toledo, Peoria & Warsaw Railway; Houston Direct Navigation Company; Cherokee Railroad, Georgia; Western North Carolina Rail Road; Alabama Central Rail Road; Savannah & Charleston Railroad; Steamer "Twilight"; Steamer "Pilot Boy"; Dudds Express Coach Company; and many more. Many of the passes are for local companies that existed for only a few years, with many merging, or being absorbed by larger companies.
At the back of the album are additional ephemera including printed committee minutes, invitations, and correspondences; most notably a George Meade Autograph Letter Signed dated July 2, 1869 thanking him for a note and enclosures regarding the Camden & Amboy Rail Road.
In all, a great snapshot of transportation in the late 19th Century.
Condition: Top board of the album is loose, and the passes on the last two pages of the albums have come free. Boards have bumped corners. Overall condition of the passes is very good to near fine.
