Description

Transportation: 1864 Steamboat Laws Broadside. This extremely rare Civil War Union broadside measures 20" x 16" and is printed in black ink on creamy white paper. Prefaced by an introduction by Secretary of the Treasury, W. P. Fessenden signed in type, there are sixteen laws listing the requirements and restrictions for operating a steamboat. Included are rules for mandatory inspections, the accessibility of life-preservers for each passenger on board, special licensing for carrying dangerous materials and proper safety equipment which must be kept in good working order. Additionally there are specific penalties listed for violations and a reward for informers in the amount of half any penalty collected. There are a few small stains and three archival tape repairs along the backside of the top edge preventing a further tear that do not significantly distract from the overall sharp appearance of this very unusual broadside. Exceedingly rare and the very first we have seen.
