Description

A Boston Marine Compass Presented by Senator Edward M. Kennedy to Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey, May 15, 1989.

The Compass of Kennedy and Haughey. 19th-century marine compass retailed by S. Thaxter & Son, 125 State Street, Boston, housed in a fitted wooden presentation case measuring 10 1/4" x 10 1/4" x 6 1/2"; compass diameter 6 3/4".

The compass was presented on May 15, 1989, by Senator Edward M. Kennedy to Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey, as recorded on an engraved metal plaque (1 3/4" x 4") mounted to the exterior of the custom case: "Presented by Senator Edward M. Kennedy to Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey, May 15, 1989, McLean, Virginia." A second engraved plaque (3" x 6") affixed to the outer case bears President John F. Kennedy's 1962 Newport statement: "We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came."

The presentation reflects the longstanding relationship between the Kennedy family and Ireland, strengthened during President John F. Kennedy's 1963 visit to Ireland and sustained in later decades. Charles J. Haughey, who would serve three terms as Taoiseach, maintained strong maritime interests, including stewardship of the island of Inishvickillane and ownership of the yacht Celtic Mist. The selection of a historic Boston nautical instrument as a diplomatic gift underscores both the Kennedy family's Massachusetts heritage and President Kennedy's well-documented association with the sea.

Following Charles Haughey's death in 2006, the compass was gifted by the Haughey family to the patriarch of the Browne family, a close family friend who had shared in their maritime activities, including time aboard Celtic Mist and visits to Inishvickillane. It has since descended within the Browne family to the present owner.

Condition: The wooden presentation case shows handling wear consistent with age, the surface having darkened to a rich patina. Brass components exhibit verdigris commensurate with long-term storage in a coastal environment. The compass dial and glass cover remain in very good condition. Overall presentation is strong; please refer to photographs for details.
