Description

Detailed Model of a RMS Titanic Lifeboat

Scale Model of the "S.S. Titanic" Lifeboat by R. Phillips. Of all the tragedy's failings, the lifeboats are perhaps the most haunting. Between the wasted space and limited number, the boats were too few, and the victims far too numerous. Skillfully crafted after those lifeboats aboard the Titanic, this model boasts neatly executed details from structural elements like the planks, rudder, and mast, to the more minute characteristics such as the rowlocks, White Star Line burgee, and of course, the name "S.S. Titanic" at the boat's bow. The plaque's wooden base measures 17.75 x 7.875 inches and the boat has a width of approximately 5 inches, height of 3 inches, and length of 15.5 inches. The brass-colored plaque credits the piece to R. Phillips and is dated 2006, with a scale of 0.5 inch to 1 foot. Six finely crafted oars accompany the boat at the base, all with an approximate length of 9.375 inches.

Condition: Very light wear to the exterior, with minor scratching on the plaque.

Provenance: Christie's, November 6, 2006, lot 237.
