Description

Cornelius Vanderbilt: Eponymous Steamship Mast Ball Finial. 17" tall, 31" in circumference, painted gesso wooden ball that adorned one of the masts of the steamship "Commodore Vanderbilt". A brass plaque that accompanies it reads: "Mast Ball Top From C. Vanderbilt Built 1847 Decommissioned 1894". Contemporary prints of the Commodore's flagship show the balls in place. Exudes great character. A wonderful relic related to America's business and industrial expansion.

Condition: Age cracks, scattered loss to paint and gesso.
