Description
"A little bit of history"
Wright Brothers Kitty Hawk Plane Relic. A 1.5" x 1.5" patch of linen represented as an authentic piece of fabric from the plane flown by Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, an event recognized as the first documented flight of a heavier-than-air plane. The 8.5" x 11" certificate is signed by Harold S. Miller, as co-executor of the Orville Wright estate and his wife, Ivonette Wright Miller, niece of the Wright Brothers. Ivonette (1896-1995) served as the semi-official Wright family historian. She became the third American woman to fly in an airplane on August 29, 1911 when she rode alongside her uncle Orville in the Wright B Flyer. She was instrumental in the Smithsonian Institution's acquisition of the original 1903 Wright Flyer. The certificate reads: "When Orville Wright prepared the Kitty Hawk machine for public exhibition, the original fabric had to be replaced, as it had been underwater during the Dayton Flood of 1913. He substituted new fabric of identical material. After his death in 1948, we found that he had preserved some of the original coverings of the wings. We certify that this piece of fabric was used by Orville and Wilbur Wright on 17 December 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina..." Accompanied by a 1989 note from Ms. Miller to the recipient of the relic, apparently a gift of "a little bit of history that took place 86 years ago."Auction Info
