Charles A. Lindbergh: A Pair of Iconic Pilot's Goggles Worn by the Legendary Pilot.When we picture famous aviators, two accessories immediately come to mind: leather flying helmets, and protective goggles like these. Indeed, Lindbergh wears a similar pair in one of his most famous photos, shown here on a first day cover celebrating the 50th anniversary of his 1927 New York-to-Paris flight.
The provenance for these goggles is impeccable: they were gifted to leading New York City physician Dr. John Lattimer by one of his favorite patients, Lucky Lindy's widow Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Dr. Lattimer had numerous celebrity patients, and kept a "trophy case" which contained these goggles as well as items such as Greta Garbo's driver's license and Katharine Hepburn's hairbrush.
The consignor became friends with Lattimer in 1996, when he and another collector, both Abraham Lincoln specialists, worked with him to create the important "Lincoln in New York" exhibition of Lattimer's outstanding collection. The collection would eventually be offered in a landmark 2009 sale.
The two spent many hours together talking in Lattimer's office, and the Lindbergh goggles always drew the consignor's eye. Dr. Lattimer loved talking about Charles Lindbergh; he was, among so many other subjects, an expert on the Lindbergh kidnapping case (he firmly believed in Hauptmann's guilt). Following Lattimer's death in 2007 the consignor obtained the Lindbergh goggles from a family member. After cherishing them for a decade he decided it was time to share them, and their delightful story, with another passionate collector. A detailed letter of provenance accompanies the goggles and will be delivered to the purchaser.
It is intriguing to speculate about the possible history of these goggles. Clearly they were well - used, and were preserved by Ann Morrow Lindbergh. It seems more than possible that they were a keepsake of one of Lindbergh's more significant flights - perhaps even his most celebrated one! But sadly their precise history has been lost.
The goggles are in excellent condition, with light soiling and wear consistent with extensive use. The aluminum case, marked "Fischer Pilot Goggle / Made in USA," has no damage, but the surface shows light scratches, abrasions, and soiling, again indicating long use. The case measures 9" x 3.25" x 2".
