Description

Admiral Richard Byrd: Personally Owned Fur Mittens. Byrd was an American naval officer, pioneering American aviator, and polar explorer.

Byrd claimed to be the first to reach both the North and South Poles by air. However, there is some controversy as to whether or not Byrd was actually the first person to reach the North Pole. It is generally believed that the distance Byrd claimed to fly was longer than the possible fuel range of his airplane.

Byrd was also the recipient of the Medal of Honor on May 9, 1926 "For distinguishing himself conspicuously by courage and intrepidity at the risk of his life, in demonstrating that it is possible for aircraft to travel in continuous flight from a now inhabited portion of the earth over the North Pole and return".

The brown fur mittens measure 10" x 14 1/2"each, and have the makers name tag "Blosveren, Sons Furriers, N.Y., and a "Byrd" personal label.

Provenance: From the Marie A Byrd Estate (Admiral Byrd's wife), sold by Carl W. Stinson, Auctioneer and Appraisers Reading, Mass., October 23, lot #B-41.

Condition: Fine with minimal wear.
