"I had to cover everything they needed to know about mineralogy in a one-hour lecture. This was a tall order..."

1964 Astronaut Training Program "Mineralogy" Class, Attendance Sheet Dated February 18, Featuring Twenty-Three Legendary NASA Astronauts with Accompanying Class Material. One page, 8 x 10.5 inches. Matted and framed under Museum Glass to an overall 15 x 19.5 inches.

The present attendance sheet features the signatures of twenty three astronauts that took part in the Astronaut Geology Training prior to the Apollo lunar landing missions. The geology training started with five classroom presentations including the "Principles of Terrestrial and Lunar Geology" by Dr. Wilhems and the "Minerology" by Dr. King. Sign-in sheets from both of those classroom presentations are available in this auction. This class was instructed by Dr. Bert King who states in his book Moon Trip : "My first lecture was delivered in February 1964. I had to cover everything they needed to know about mineralogy in a one-hour lecture. This was a tall order. I got through the material, leaving a lot of gaps out of necessity, but the astronauts seemed satisfied. I kept the roll sheet from this first class as a souvenir." In the early stages of the Apollo program, NASA decided to train the astronauts in the field of geology. Their thinking was that these astronauts, armed with good geologic field experience, would maximize their effectiveness in lunar rock collecting in the few precious minutes scheduled for such activity on the Moon, among the numerous other scientific duties and tasks they were charged with accomplishing on their missions. The names contained in this sheet are the chosen men who had their very own aspirations of accomplishing the goal that John F. Kennedy famously stated in his speech at Rice University in 1962.

Copies of correspondence recounting their recollection of the course training are included from Bill Anders, Neil Armstrong, Alan Bean, Walt Cunningham, Richard Gordon, and James Lovell. Also included are multiple original documents pertaining to the class, including "Outline of Lecture and Laboratory on Meteorites and Tektites" and "Summary of Information from Lecture on Meteorites and Tektites." Signatures are in the hand of the listed astronaut unless otherwise noted.

COA from Gerry Montague verifying signatures as described.

Condition: Fine.

Provenance: The sign-in page was retained by Dr. King. A photocopy of the envelope Dr. King used to store the sheets in with handwriting describing his refusal to sell them to a collector in 1988 is also included.
