Steve Fossett (1944-2007), bold signature with "First Solo RTW [Round the World], 19 June - 4 July 2002" on the cover of the Sept./Oct. 2002 issue of Ballooning magazine, the cover features an aerial view of Fossett's balloon, Sprit of Freedom, crossing the coast of Australia on his historic flight, Very Fine.Estimate $500-$750
Steve Fossett made his fortune in the financial markets then turned to adventuring. Besides being the first to fly solo around the world in a balloon, he was also the first to fly solo around the world in an airplane without stopping to refuel (2005). He holds more than 50 world records in balloons, airplanes, gliders and sailboats. At the time of his death he was pursuing the land speed record with a jet-powered racing car.
In addition to his pursuit of records, Fossett also was fascinated by endurance sports of all kinds. Accordingly he had swum the English Channel, run Alaska's famed Iditarod Dogsled Race, driven the 24 Hours of Le Mans and finished the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii.
Fossett disappeared on September 3, 2007, shortly after in a small plane from a private Nevada airstrip. Despite a mammoth search effort, his remains were not discovered until October of 2008, eight months after his family had had him declared legally dead.
