Description

HAWAII AND CALIFORNIA
Rare Newspaper Wrapper from Hawaii

ca. 1852, Honolulu, Hawaii to New York, N.Y. Wrapper postmarked with the very rare red oval "U.S./ Postage Paid", printed address to the Hawaiian Consul General in New York City, Very Fine. The wrapper would likely have contained a newspaper weighing no more than three ounces. Fewer than a half dozen wrappers from Hawaii are recorded.

Estimate $7,500-$10,000

ONE OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS POSTMARK.

The other four examples of this postmark are an 1852 cover with a 13¢ Hawaiian Missionary to Nashua N.H.; an 1852 stampless cover to Russia; and an off-cover pair of the 1853 13¢ Kamehameha; these three being from the Honolulu Advertiser collection. The fourth example is an undated wrapper to Newark, N.J. in the Christian H. Aall collection.

The device was later altered, by removing the "U.S.", and used to cancel the Hawaiian Numerals of 1859-62.The marking in its early, unaltered, state is not even listed by Meyer & Harris.
