Description
THE HIGHEST GRADED MINT 30¢
30c Orange (38), centered with near-mathematical precision
with exceptionally large margins that leave the design virtually
untouched by the perforations; bright, radiant color and full
original gum, fresh and Extremely Fine to Superb. Scott $2,400.SMQ $10,800
Expertization: PSE Encapsulated graded 95
A MINT GEM IN THE HIGHEST OBTAINABLE QUALITY.
As with almost all of the 1857 issue, the 30¢ stamps were very closely spaced on the plate, leaving little room for the perforating machine to navigate. In 40 years, we have seen only 2 or 3 examples where the perforations were absolutely completely clear of the design and one of these was used. But this stamp being essentially perfectly centered and wonderfully fresh, is one of just 5 to have been awarded 95, the highest grade to date for a mint 30¢.
