1774, February 4, Salem, Mass. The Essex Gazette, four pages, 9¾" x1 5½", manuscript address above masthead "Rev Paine Wingate, Hampton Falls"; minor flaws and archival filing holes along vertical fold, Fine to Very Fine.

Subscription information at the bottom of the back page gives us insight into the Colonial postal rates for newspapers: "THIS GAZETTE may be had for Six Shillings and Eight Pence per Annum, (exclusive of Postage) 3s. 4d, (or 4s. 6d. if sent by the Post) to be paid at Entrance." The difference between the six-month subscription price with and without postage was 1 shilling two pence A shilling was equivalent to 24¢ and 2 pence to 4¢ for a total of 28¢.. The newspaper was published weekly or a little over 26 times per six months. Hence 28¢ equates to roughly 1¢ per paper.
