Description
Flown to the surface of the moon.
Apollo 16 Lunar Module Flown American Flag on Certificate Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke, Signed and Certified. A 5.75" x 4.875" cloth U.S. flag mounted to a 10" x 12" certificate that states: "This flag was flown aboard the first Apollo mission to the Lunar Highlands". Duke has signed directly on the flag: "I certify that this/ flag was flown to the lunar surface/ aboard the LM Orion. Charlie Duke Apollo 16". There are printed signatures of the crew beneath. At lower right, Duke has written a personal message to the original recipient: "To Ben and Pris/ With best wishes to/ two of my favorite people./ You are topped only by two great Carolinians./ Charlie Duke" (Duke was born in Charlotte, North Carolina). American flags that flew all the way to the lunar surface and are certified as such on their surface are quite scarce and very desirable to collectors. The certificate is generally toned from poor storage and has a tear at the left edge; the flag has the expected light glue stains in all four corners. Overall, very good condition.Auction Info
