Description

Worn by Fred Haise aboard the U.S.S. Iwo Jima and to meet President Nixon in Hawaii.

Apollo 13 Recovery Ship U.S.S. Iwo Jima Hat Directly from the Personal Collection of Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise, with Signed Letter of Authenticity. A blue wool baseball-style cap, size 7 1/8, by Harvard Sports Headwear (by Pittsburgh Hat & Cap Co. tag) with yellow cloth bullion on the bill and an embroidered "U.S.S. IWO JIMA/ ASTRONAUT/ HAISE/ APOLLO 13" on the front. This was the hat worn by Fred Haise in the iconic recovery photos aboard U.S.S. Iwo Jima following the perilous flight of Apollo 13. The images of the three-man crew safely back on Earth were a welcome sight worldwide as the nearly disastrous mission captivated millions. A likeness of this hat sits atop a statue of Haise and the Apollo 13 crew as part of a life-size sculpture unveiled at the Space Center in Houston in 2021. An incredibly unique opportunity to obtain an iconic memento of the American space program directly from the astronaut that wore it over fifty four years ago. Light age related wear, very fine.
