Description
The painting from which the limited edition lithographs were produced
Apollo 13: Lumen Winter Original Oil on Canvas "Steeds of Apollo" Painting, 1981, the Basis for the Apollo 13 Mission Insignia. A familiar image for all Space collectors, many of whom likely own the limited edition print made from it. This large oil painting on canvas measures 35.25" x 22.5" (sight size) and is nicely framed to an overall 40.25" x 27.5". Signed at lower right "Lumen Winter 19 © 81 ". "Steeds of Apollo" depicts the myth of Apollo and his task to pull the sun across the sky. Apollo 13 Commander James Lovell gives the back story: "The artist Lumen Winter was commissioned in 1969 by the St. Regis Hotel in New York to paint the mural. For many years it graced the main lounge of the hotel. Because our lunar space flights were named 'Apollo' we asked Lumen Winter to design a patch for our 1970 Apollo 13 space flight based on the Apollo legend. He centered the insignia around the three main horses from his mural..." Other than the large 20' original mural which now hangs at the Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in Chicago along with the quote by Lovell: "l have seen the Earth as it truly is...A grand oasis in the vastness of space...", this is the only other original artwork for this subject matter ever painted by Winter. A brilliant item for display in any collection. Fine.Included with the painting is a 10" x 8" photo of Winter along with the Apollo 13 flown crew, all holding the design for the mission insignia, dated June 4, 1970. Also included is a notarized LOA by Thomas V. Nowak the widower of Catherine Winter Nowak, Lumen Winters daughter.
