SPACE ART

Alan Bean Signed Limited Edition "The Hammer and the Feather" Print, also Signed by Dave Scott, in Framed Display. A 21" x 29" (sight size) color lithograph issued in 2000 from an original 1986 acrylic painting by Bean, signed beneath the image: "Alan Bean" and "Dave Scott". It pictures Dave Scott confirming Galileo Galilei's discovery that "gravity pulls all bodies equally regardless of their weight" by dropping a feather and a hammer simultaneously on the moon. Beautifully double matted and framed to an overall 28.5" x 37". Minor flaws in the plexi, very fine.

Alan Bean describes the background of the image: "Back in the summer of 1971, I was watching as Apollo 15 Astronauts Dave Scott and Jim Irwin loaded the lunar module Falcon with exposed film and dusty moon rocks. As if cued by an invisible director, Scott turned and moved toward the camera. 'Well, in my left hand I have a feather; in my right hand a hammer. I guess one of the reasons we got here today was because of a gentleman named Galileo. A long time ago, he made a rather significant discovery about falling objects in gravity fields and we thought - where would be a better place to confirm his findings than on the Moon? And, so, we thought we'd try it here for you. The feather is, appropriately, from an Air Force Academy falcon [the Apollo 15 lunar module was nicknamed Falcon]. I'll drop the hammer and the feather and, hopefully, they'll hit the ground at the same time.' Well, Dave let them go and since there is no atmosphere on the Moon, they fell side by side. They did fall more slowly than on Earth because the gravity is one-sixth that of Earth's. Dave continued, 'How about that, this proves that Mr. Galileo was correct in his findings.' Scott had perfectly illustrated the hand of the Italian Renaissance on one of our century's greatest achievements."
