Description

Walter Dornberger Signed Photo. A 5" x 7" glossy portrait, signed in black ink: "Walter R. Dornberger/ 1972". Dornberger was the leader of Nazi Germany's V-2 rocket program at the Peenemünde Army Research Center. He hired the young Wernher von Braun to work on the project and actually saved his life. Von Braun was arrested by the Gestapo in March 1944, based partially on Himmler's false charges that he was a communist sympathizer, and taken to a cell in Poland where he was held without being charged. Dornberger obtained his release by convincing Hitler that he was indispensable to the V-2 program. After the war, Dornberger was brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip and worked for the Air Force in developing guided missiles before going to work for Bell Aircraft where he played a crucial role in the development of the X-15 and X-20 Dyna-Soar projects. He died in 1980. Very fine.
