Description
Ted Freeman Inscribed Signed Portrait, a Print from Pencil Artwork by R. Juge. An 8" x 10" print on heavy stock of astronaut Theodore C. "Ted" Freeman, nicely signed and inscribed in blue ink: "Best wishes to the Chrysler Corporation, Ted Freeman, Capt. USAF." The image captures Freeman in a pressure suit, showing sharp detailing and confident draftsmanship. Quite rare. Toning at edges and verso would mat out. Very fine.Captain Theodore Freeman was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1963 as part of Group 3 but tragically died in a T-38 jet crash in 1964 before flying in space, becoming the first astronaut lost in the American space program. The inscription to Chrysler Corporation, a major aerospace contractor for NASA during the Apollo program (notably responsible for the Saturn IB's S-IV stage), underscores Freeman's role in the public outreach and engineering engagement efforts during NASA's early crewed spaceflight era. A rare and poignant signed piece from a fallen astronaut whose potential was cut short but whose legacy contributed to the eventual success of Apollo. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
