Description

Mercury-Redstone 3 (Freedom 7) Launch Day: Twelve Vintage Glossy Photos of Alan Shepard's Medical Exam and Suiting Up, Gordon Cooper, and John Glenn, all from the Personal Archives of NASA Legend Bill Taub. Ranging in size from 7" x 10" to 8" x 10.75", these B&W candid prints were all taken on May 5, 1961, the date of America's first manned space launch. Five (one duplicate) picture Alan Shepard undergoing various medical tests, three are of him suited up, three depict Gordon Cooper at a console monitoring the countdown, and one of mission backup John Glenn on his way to breakfast. Generally excellent.

NOTE: The photos from this archive were the inspiration for the recent book by J. L. Pickering and John Bisney, Photographing America's First Astronauts, Project Mercury Through the Lens of Bill Taub. A beautiful book from the Purdue University Press. Highly recommended. From the Collection of J. L. Pickering
