Description

LIFE Magazine's "Picture of the Century"

Lunar Orbiter 2: Crater Copernicus Silver Large Gelatin Photo, Taken November 24, 1966. A 23" x 19" B&W photo mounted on matboard. This was an earth-shattering accomplishment in space exploration and photography. Lunar Orbiter 2 took this magnificent image from an altitude of twenty-seven miles and a distance of 125 miles. What made it so unique was the oblique angle; instead of looking straight down at the surface, the spacecraft was looking sideways at the moon giving the public a view of the moon they had never seen. A very important image. Light surface wear and moderate "silvering" seen only in raking light. Fine.
