Interesting comments from a little-remembered but extremely important member of the Mission Control team that got Apollo 13 back home. Excellent.Chuck Deiterich was one of the Flight Dynamics Officers (FIDO) in Mission Control during the Apollo 13 crisis, responsible for calculating and recommending critical trajectory maneuvers. He played a key role in developing the mid-course correction burns that realigned the spacecraft for a safe return to Earth after the oxygen tank explosion. His precise orbital mechanics work and quick judgment were instrumental in helping guide Apollo 13's damaged spacecraft back on a free-return trajectory, one of the decisive technical successes that saved the crew.
