Description

Charlie Duke Signed Large Apollo 16 Lunar Surface Color Photo. A 20" x 16" glossy photo on Fujicolor Professional paper, image AS16-114-18439, of Duke standing in the shadow of the Lunar Module (LM) behind the ultraviolet (UV) camera which is in operation. The American flag and the LRV are visible in the background. Signed boldly in gold felt tip: "Charlie Duke/ Apollo 16 LMP". Very fine.

In the foreground stands the gold-colored Far-Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph (FUV), gleaming in the sunlight. Its metallic sheen contrasts beautifully with the dark, gray lunar regolith surrounding it. The camera, a marvel of engineering, was designed to capture celestial objects in the far-ultraviolet spectrum, invisible to the human eye. Over 180 photographs and spectra in far-ultraviolet light were obtained showing clouds of hydrogen and other gases and several thousand stars. Charlie Duke, the Lunar Module Pilot, stands in the shadows cast by the LM, dwarfed by the vastness of the lunar landscape. He carries a lunar sample, a tangible piece of the Moon collected for scientific analysis back on Earth.
