PROJECT MERCURY
Mercury Seven Astronauts: Early NASA Group Photo Signed by All, Originally Given by Gus Grissom's Son to a Childhood Friend, with Letter of Provenance and Scott Cornish LOA. A 10" x 8" B&W matte finish photo picturing the first seven astronauts chosen by NASA for their Man in Space project. This photo, showing the astronauts inspecting a Mercury Atlas model, was one of a series of photos taken at Langley Research Center. All seven of these brave men, who laid the groundwork for America's space program, have signed in various inks with the earliest forms of their signatures: "Alan B Shepard Jr", "Walter M. Schirra Jr", "John H. Glenn, Jr.", "Virgil I. Grissom", "M. Scott Carpenter", "Donald K. Slayton", and "Leroy G. Cooper, Jr". Grissom has written an inscription at upper right: "Best wishes to Scotty's [his son Scott Grissom]/ good friend Peter Nestor/ from the Mercury Astronauts". A great example of this desirable item with a documented history. Included with the lot is a signed LOA from Scott Cornish, dated 2009. Very minor roughness at bottom edge, a tiny bit of expected "silvering" visible only under raking light, very fine. Also included with this lot is a signed letter from Peter Nestor's widow that reads, in full: "This signed photo of the Mercury Seven astronauts was given to my late husband, Peter Nestor, in the early 1960s by Gus Grissom. Grissom's son, Scotty, was one of Peter's childhood friends. Peter's father, James Nestor, was an engineer for NASA. Many of the professionals working for NASA and the then current and prospective astronauts lived in the same neighborhood in Newport News, Virginia. This is where Scotty and Peter met and where the photo was received. I was married to Peter for 21 years until his death in 1996. At that time the photo came into my possession."
