Description

Apollo: Uprated Saturn IB Marshall George C. Marshall Space Flight Center Launch Vehicle Model. A rare model produced by the Graphic Engineering and Models Division at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Measuring approximately 29.5" tall on a 5.5" square wooden base the model features separable sections include the base, first stage (S-IB), second stage (S-IVB), instrument unit, a two-piece lunar module (ascent and descent stages), service module, command module, and launch escape tower. The plate at the base labels this as an "Uprated" version of the Saturn I and the case features a vintage diagram for the model to be assembled in configurations for AS-206 and AS-207. The AS-206 mission was initially planned as an uncrewed test flight of the Lunar Module (LM) in Earth orbit. It was intended to follow AS-204 (which became Apollo 1). However, the Apollo 1 fire delayed plans, and AS-206 was eventually used to launch the first crewed mission to the Skylab space station in 1973. Mission number AS-207 was also repurposed for the Skylab program, which was seen as a logical extension of Apollo capabilities into long-duration orbital science missions. Housed in original 27" x 7" x 7" shipping case, labeled "SATURN IB No. 130". Directly from the estate of Saturn Project Manager Norman Rafel. An incredibly unique model and the first featuring the "Uprated" aspects that Heritage has offered. Age and use related wear. Some damage to LM including rod connecting Ascent and Descent stages missing. Service module sits atop both spacecraft adapter pieces without firmly locking into place. Overall fine.
