Vostok 2 Flown Food Tubes (Two) Originally from the Collection
of Cosmonaut Gherman Titov. Two metal tubes of 2.25" x 6.25",
one labeled in orange: "МОСКОВСКИЙ ПАШТЕТ ПЕЧЁНОЧНЫЙ" (Moscow Style
Liver Pâté); the other is labeled in white (a dark stain covers
part of the printing): "КЫЖОВНИКОВОЕ ПЮРЕ", (Gooseberry Purée, a
sweet fruit food item that was part of the early Vostok and Voskhod
cosmonaut rations). These were taken onboard and consumed during
Titov's landmark mission, August 6-7, 1961, the first time a human
spent an entire 24-hour period away from the surface of the
earth.These tubes were made of tinned steel with a heavy crimp and metal screw cap, designed to be opened in zero gravity without spilling. The typography and material of these tubes are consistent with 1960s Soviet production. This packaging style was used by the Institute of Food Concentrates in Moscow, which supplied food for both cosmonaut and military use. Museum-worthy.
