Description

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) Flown Limited Edition Tile Segment Presentation. A 0.5" cube-shaped segment of the thermal tile taken from Columbia after the first orbital test flight of the Space Shuttle, embedded in a 3.5" x 2.5" x 1" clear acrylic display. The card mounted beneath the tile states that it was (in part): "Presented to Leonard S Nicholson In appreciation of your steadfast support of the Space Shuttle program...", is numbered "3458", and signed in facsimile by Christopher C. Kraft Jr. The verso of the card reads: "This is a segment of a thermal tile which protected the Space Shuttle Orbiter 'Columbia' (STS-1) from the heat of reentry on its first flight April 12-14, 1981". Excellent.
