Description

STS-1 tile presented to mission commander.

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) Flown High Temperature Reusable Surface Insulation Tile Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander John Young, with Signed COA. A rarely-offered black HRSI tile that flew on the first Space Shuttle mission in 1981. This 6" x 3.75" x 1.75" (overall) odd-shaped tile was presented to Young by its manufacturer Lockheed loosely mounted to a 8.5" square x 1" tall wooden base with an engraved plate: "To Astronaut John Young/ Congratulations on the Success of STS-1/ Lockheed HRSI Team/ May 27, 1981". The tile's serial number is in yellow at top: "V070-293013-067-008198". There is a protective Plexiglas cover and the display is 3.5" tall when covered. Tiles were an integral component of the Space Shuttle orbiter's thermal protection system. This system shielded the vehicle from the destructively searing heat of re-entry into the atmosphere and also provided passive thermal control in orbit. About 20,000 black tiles shielded the entire underside of the orbiter, as well as portions of the vertical tail, wings, and forward and aft fuselage. This is the first one of these we've offered. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a signed Letter of Authenticity on his personal letterhead stating, in full: "I hereby certify that the accompanying STS 1 HRSI tile, mounted and presented to me by Lockheed was from our STS 1 spacecraft and has been part of my personal collection since the mission."
